Ishmael and Isaac

Hello, God has given me something in 1 Chronicles 1:28 which says,

“The sons of Abraham:
   Isaac and Ishmael.”

Ishmael: Ishmael is a picture of unbelievers. Isaac is a picture of believers. Ishmael teased Isaac, like some unbelievers. But even though it seems like we go through really hard times, harder than anyone else, Jesus still went through more. We do go through hard times, as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 which says,

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

Isaac: Isaac represents believers. He also represents Christ in Genesis 22. God had told Abraham to take his son up to the mountain and sacrifice him, his only son. Abraham got up to the mountain and raised the knife when and an angel told him not to lay a hand on him, and there was a ram in some vines. How is Isaac a picture of Jesus? They needed to offer sacrifices, and we needed a sacrifice. We would have died in our sin, and without a sacrifice, the sin could not be atoned for. Jesus was our sacrifice on the cross, He is God’s only son just like Isaac. Isaac was Abraham’s only son, and he was to sacrifice him, but Isaac was not sacrificed. He was only a shadow of Jesus. Jesus died on the cross for us. He gave His own life for us.

What are we going to do?: Jesus died for us, which makes us thankful. So, what are we going to do? Worship Jesus! He gave His only life for us. He is the   Son of God, and He gave His life for us. We were some horrible, sinful, unholy, wretches; yet Jesus gave His life for us.

Closing prayer: Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for dying on the cross for us. Thank You for giving Your own life for us. I pray that I would love You more. I pray that I would follow Your example. I pray that I would be closer to You, Jesus. I pray for those in China, that they would bring so many to You, and be encouraged in some way. Thank You for giving Your life for us when we were in our sin, and we anything but perfect. Thank You, Jesus, for loving us so much that You would even give Your life for us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Peace and love, Joy Cleveland
