I will try to publish a chapter of my revised book (Lessons for Christians) everyday, or maybe every few days. I may not be able to get them done soon enough. It is now a work-book.
CHAPTER ONE: ABOUT JESUS
Have you heard about Jesus? If you haven’t, keep reading, and I’ll tell you about Him. If you have, this will encourage you. Jesus died for you and me, and I want everyone to know about Him, and in fact, God our Creator wants us to know about Him, too. John 3:16 says
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Question 1. According to John 3:16 above, what did God do to show His love to the world? Please write out your answer below:
Question 2. According to the above passage, what happens to anyone who believes in Jesus? Write your answer here:
Doesn’t that sound great? So Jesus was sent to this earth to die for you and for me! This verse shows us two reasons why God sent His Son. What are those two reasons? Please write your answer below
So God sent His son, first, because He loved us, and second so that we would not perish in hell, but instead have eternal life.
But not everyone believes. Some people think that alcohol or drugs, or other religions, or psychology and psychiatry (people who say we need drugs for our “mind problems”) are the answer. That is not true. Trusting in man is not wise, and here are some verses that teach this:
“This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD” (Jeremiah 17:5).
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man” (Psalm 118:8).
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes o the Father except through me’” (John 14:6).
Question 3. What do the above passages say about someone who turns away from the Lord and does not believe in Him?
So we can see that putting our trust in man brings a curse, but those people who take refuge in the Lord have hope! This is because Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life:
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.””
I want you to know how much Jesus loves you and everyone else. Even if some people say you’re ugly, or if you don’t feel like anyone else loves you, God loves you. Look at this passage:
“9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).
Question 4. According to 1 John 4:9-10 above, how did God show us that He loves us?
You know Jesus was a great King while He was on this earth, but the crown Jesus had was a crown of thorns at the cross.
“1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face. John 19:1-3
See how much He loves you? So if you believe in Jesus (like you saw John 3:16 above said to do) and truly love him then you will go to heaven.
But to see if you love Jesus, search your heart.
4 In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Selah Psalm 4:4
5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you–unless, of course, you fail the test? 2 Corinthians 13:5
The way you search your heart is you ask God to help you, and if you don’t know how to ask God just pray. Here’s a short prayer right now that you can pray:
“Dear God please help me to see any sin in my life and help me to get rid of it, in Jesus name I pray.”
So in closing this first chapter, I want you to know two things very well: 1–how Jesus died for you; in other words the Gospel. And 2–how much Jesus loves you. So that way you can love Him like He already does you!
You can look up any Book in the Bible, and it will have the Gospel in it. Even before Jesus was born the Bible points forward to the Gospel, and after He was born it points backward to the Gospel. So, everywhere you look in the Bible you will find the gospel. You can see that in this passage:
1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Question 5. According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, what is of first importance? Please circle one.
I would encourage you to read the Bible every day and find the gospel at least one time. And then you will start to really love Jesus, like I do.
So here are four things that could really help you in your life: 1–read the Bible every day and find the gospel in it. 2—learn to love Jesus. 3–go to church where the gospel is preached, and 4–listen to the pastor and contribute in the church service.
Peace and love, Joy Cleveland
