Revised Sermon

Hello, we went to a different church, and again the pastor failed to preach the Gospel. He preached on Ephesians 4:11-16, which says,

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Paul is saying that Christ gave the prophets, evangelists, pastors (etc.) so that he may equip his people, and so that the body may be built up, until we reach unity in faith and the knowledge of Jesus. Christ gave the teachers to the people so that we may be built up, so that we will not be infants, and not be tossed about by the waves, the schemes of our crafty foes.

What is the teaching that stabilizes us? The Gospel! Jesus died on the cross and He saved us from our sin. He died in our place, and became our solid rock to stand on. The teachers should teach the Gospel! The Pastors should preach the Gospel! The Evangelists should give the Gospel to those who are not saved. The Gospel is the only thing that can save us, and keep us stable in the waves of temptation.

Ephesians 4:15 says,

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”

Now we should speak the truth (Jesus, John 14:6, and what He did for us) with love. John 14:6 says,

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

So, let’s speak about what Jesus did for us with love. And while we do that we will grow and mature to be the body of the head, and the head is Christ. While we speak the truth with love, we also will mature to be the body of Christ, who is the head.

Let’s speak the truth of the Gospel!

The Pastor did not say what I did, but I revised it (completely) to have the Gospel.

Peace and love, Joy Cleveland
