Hello, today my sister and I are doing our post together on Zechariah 4:9 which says:
“The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.”
Clearly Zerubbabel did not build the foundation of the temple all by himself, and he did not complete the temple by himself either. So what does this mean? This passage is pointing forward to someone who did lay the foundation to the temple, and who did complete the temple.
Zerubbabel is a picture of Jesus, who lay the foundations for the spiritual temple and finished the spiritual temple! What does that mean, and how did Jesus build a spiritual temple? In John 2:19 Jesus tells us that the temple would be destroyed and He would build it back up in 3 days. What did Jesus mean by that? Jesus didn’t mean the physical temple, He meant Himself. He meant that He would die, and then He would rise again on the third day.
Jesus did do that, but why? Why did Jesus die on the cross and rise again? Jesus died on the cross for us. He took all the wrong things, all the sin, that we have done; He died on the cross with all our sin, and He took the wrath that we deserved. Jesus has saved us from God’s wrath.
