Hello, today me and my sister are doing a post together on Zechariah 13:7 which says:
“Awake, sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who is close to me!”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered,
and I will turn my hand against the little ones.”
Zechariah was prophet, so most of this book was prophecy. This is another prophecy about a shepherd being struck, and the sheep scattering. This prophecy was again fulfilled by Jesus.
Jesus, in fact, was the shepherd that was struck. He was struck for His sheep. Jesus took the punishment and wrath that we (His Sheep) deserved. We were the ones who deserved the punishment of sin, but Jesus took it.
This also points forward to Jesus in that when Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the garden of Gethsemane all of His disciples (or “sheep”) ran away. They scattered and left Jesus alone to take the wrath of God and the sins of the world upon Himself. But when they ran away we can see Jesus’ compassion and love for them because He told His capturers to take Him and let his disciples go.
Jesus was struck in our place, and He saved us from God’s wrath!
